Restaurant news: Enjoy spring specials with a fresh side of live music


Chef Bryan Emperor invites you to visit Kalu's lounge between 5 and 7 p.m. and enjoy $30 worth of Asian cuisine for $15 each night during the month of May. Selections will be changed nightly and will feature three dishes.

Mondays at Zink take advantage of their All-American Pig Night: three pork-inspired courses for $35. Try Zink's handcut fries on Mondays, too. Fries are cooked in local, organic pork fat. There are half-price bar bites Sunday through Thursday from 4-7 p.m, including Root Beer Glazed Baby Back Ribs, Housemade Hot Pretzels and more. On May 21, Zink's cooking class features the Florida Keys. Learn to make deviled stone crab tarts with avocado-mango relish from 10 a.m.-noon. Call the restaurant for reservations.

Big View Diner

Barbecue. Burgers. Brews. Enjoy a night on Big View Diner's patio on Thursday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m.-close. Choose $3 Barbecue Brisket Sliders or $3 Cheeseburger Sliders and add fixings from the slider bar. There will be live music and $3 draft beers. Arrive early as patio seating is limited.

Big View has also unveiled their new dessert menu. Selections from the bake shop include Peach Crème Brulee, Brown Sugar and Raisin Bread Pudding and Strawberry and Rhubarb Cobbler. The Triple D is still there: chocolate cake with six scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate, caramel, nuts, bananas and cherries. It is free for those who can finish the Triple D on their own and $13.99 for others. Make sure to check out their new spiked milkshakes, too.

Wednesday nights from 5-8 p.m., children between the ages of 4 and 12 can enjoy a movie and festivities in the party room while mom and dad enjoy dinner and drink specials. The movie on May 18 is "Shrek Forever After." "Tangled" will be shown on May 25 and "Yogi Bear" on June 1.

Daily from 4-7 p.m. take advantage of Upstream's Sushi Extravaganza. Select sushi rolls are half price and their Quick Bites menu has special pricing on their famous crab cakes, mussels and calamari. On Sundays from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. brunch is served for $24.95 per person. Price includes a raw bar, seafood, made to order omelets and tapas.

The Sweet Summer Music Series is every Thursday, Friday and Saturday with live music and drink specials. Thursdays are for music on the patio, Fridays and Saturdays will have live music in the lounge. A new brunch menu is also being offered. It features breakfast burritos with farm fresh eggs, Spanish chorizo and mozzarella, Banana French Toast with strawberry mascarpone, a forest mushroom Benedict: two poached eggs with spinach, goat cheese and ciabatta and more.

Doug Bell has taken over as owner of this popular spot and has brought on Chef David Jones. The menu has been updated and includes salads, burgers and more; check their website for daily specials. Wednesdays come in for live music beginning at 10 p.m.

Ruth's Chris Steak House

A patio kick-off party is planned at Ruth's Chris SouthPark location on the evening of May 20 . Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and whiskey on special provided by Brown-Forman; Outland Cigars will also be in attendance. Brad Bailey will provide live guitar music. Sunday Brunch is offered at Ruth's Chris from 11 a.m. -3 p.m. Features include Brioche French toast, Shrimp and Grits or steak.

This self-serve Mongolian barbecue spot opens May 19 at Ballantyne Corners Shopping Center. Two set prices: $8.99 for lunch, $10.99 for dinner. Reservations can be made by calling the restaurant.
