Memorial Day events slated to begin today

If you're near Matthews or Pineville this weekend, you'll have two chances to celebrate Memorial Day in a meaningful way.

Today, Pineville's Annual Memorial Weekend Tribute to Veterans begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Hut, at 413 Johnston Drive in Pineville.

The commemoration will include special recognitions and presentations, followed by a processional to the cemetery for closing remarks, a prayer and a 21-gun salute.

Light refreshments will be served at the Hut after the ceremony. For more information, call Pineville Town Hall at 704-889-2291.

At 11 a.m. on Monday, Matthews American Legion Post 235 will hold its annual Memorial Day celebration at Stumptown Park, 120 South Trade St. in Matthews.

Members of a local high school JROTC unit will present the colors, and Matthews commissioner Nancy Moore will sing the national anthem.

The program will include a special POW/MIA ceremony and Operation Tribute to Freedom speaker Army Staff Sgt. Bradford Griffith.

For more information, call Peter McMurtrie, 704-814-4962.
