Restaurant news: Foodies prepare for outdoor festival, dining

Taste of Charlotte

The 13th annual Taste of Charlotte is happening June 10-12. Friday and Saturday the festival will run from 11 a.m.- 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. The event will take place on Tryon Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Sixth Street and offer food to sample from numerous Charlotte restaurants, arts and crafts, entertainment and a kids' zone. Festival coins are required to purchase food and can be bought online in advance or day of at the festival.

A patio beer tasting on June 1 will feature Great Lakes Brewing Company and include a variety of tapas selections from Chef Darius. The event runs from 6-8 p.m. Guests will sample Holy Moses White Ale, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Burning River Pale Ale and Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Cost is $25 per person; seating is limited. Mai Japanese at Colony Place is serving lunch specials from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. You can find Teriyaki Chicken served with salad, Miso soup and rice for $8.50, a sushi combo platter for $10.50 and Ten Udon: white noodles with fish broth for $8.50. Stick around for the Fried Lemon Pie for dessert: lemon filling and meringue fried in tempura batter.

Try your hand at Texas Hold 'em on June 23 at 7 p.m. Cost of $65 goes directly to Make-A-Wish to grant a wish for a local child. Tournament-style play includes chips you can exchange for prizes. Pineville's new bakery is open for business and features 27 flavors of scones, as well as bars, brownies and other scratch made treats. A breakfast and lunch menu is also available.

Farm to Table Dinners

Poplar Ridge Farm in Waxhaw is serving farm fresh, multicourse dinners in their outdoor dining area throughout the summer. Each event runs from 6:15-9:30 p.m. and consists of a four-course dinner, cooking demonstration and lecture. Meals are prepared using Poplar Ridge Farm's seasonal produce. A wine tasting accompanies each course; price is $80 per person.

The first dinner is June 8 and features Chef Hollace Stephenson of Tastemakers Charlotte. Chef Hollace is an expert gourmet chef, known for her healthy vegetarian and vegan cuisine. The new lunch menu includes soups and salads, pastas such as penne ala vodka and sausage and peppers and entrée favorites like chicken piccata and grilled wild salmon. Coming for dinner? Try the express lunch during the week for $9.95, which includes your choice soup or salad, a slice of pizza and an entrée. Iced tea is complimentary and served with lunch. Sundays come for brunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Choose from a variety of brunch items such as frittata and ravioli. A kids' brunch plate is available for $5. Need dinner to go? Individual or family-size takeout is offered. Family-size portions feed four-six people and include entrées, salad, bread and beans. Take out requires two-hour notice during the week, one-hour notice on weekends.

A chicken pot pie large enough to bring home is $5.99 here and worth a look. Open Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Cluck 'N Cup offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and takeout. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. during the week and all day on Saturdays. Takeout is offered two ways: Take to Bake, which is their chicken pot pies and broccoli casseroles, and Take to Enjoy, which includes white bean chili, chicken salad and pimento cheese.
