Quail Hollow

New waterslides at the Y: The Harris YMCA's indoor pool play area is getting a facelift this week, as a tall waterslide replaces the two adjacent slides and a kiddie slide shaped like a whale replaces the water-spouting fish. The indoor pool is open year-round.

Matthews

Cotswold

National honor: Cotswold Elementary School's International Baccalaureate Primary Years magnet program received the 2011 Special Recognition Award for Elementary Schools of Excellence from Magnet Schools of America. The honor recognizes Cotswold's program as one of the top two magnet elementaries in the nation. Cotswold also got a $1,500 cash prize. The school was selected from 227 other Magnet Schools of Excellence from around the country.

Public hearing: A public meeting to review a rezoning proposal will be held 6 p.m. June 20 at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. Fourth St. The City Council will discuss the proposed development of 12.4 acres at the corner of Johnston Road and Providence Road West by 521 Partners, LLC.

Volunteers needed: About 300 volunteers are needed for the 10th annual 24 Hours of Booty Event on July 29-30 in Myers Park. The nonprofit raises money for cancer research. Volunteers are assigned to three and four-hour shifts for jobs such as packet pickup, pre-event preparation, course marking, food and beverage distribution, campground management, hospitality, parking and traffic control. Pineville

Garbage schedule: Garbage pickup will operate on a one-day delay in observance of Memorial Day. Garbage will be collected June 2 instead of June 1. The regular schedule will resume the week of June 6. Details: www.pinevillenc.net.

Matthews

Spaghetti fundraiser: Matthews Police Department will hold a spaghetti dinner 6-8 p.m. June 3 at Crews Recreation Center, 1201 Crews Road, Matthews. Dinner costs $5 per plate; raffle tickets are $1 each. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics North Carolina.
