Filing period: The filing period will begin at noon July 1 for municipal elections. Elections will be held Oct. 11 in Monroe and Nov. 8 in Fairview, Hemby Bridge, Indian Trail, Lake Park, Marshville, Marvin, Mineral Springs, Unionville, Waxhaw, Wesley Chapel and Wingate. The filing deadline is noon July 15.

Arts program: The Union County Community Arts Council is accepting applications for its Grassroots Arts Program. Grants will be issued for cultural arts projects, events and services that occur July 1 to June 30, 2012. Applications must be received no later than noon Aug. 25.

Free plane rides: June 11 is International Young Eagles Day at the Monroe Airport, 3900 Paul J Helms Drive, Monroe. Kids ages 8-17 can enjoy free plane rides 10 a.m.-3 p.m., thanks to Charlotte EAA Chapter 309 volunteers. A National Guard helicopter and "Tinker Belle" (a WWII C-46 airplane) will be on display. Town budget: Stallings may not see a property tax increase this year. Stallings Town Manager Brian Matthews is recommending the town's tax rate stay at 21.5 cents per $100 valuation for the 2011-12 fiscal year. A public hearing on the budget will be 7 p.m. June 13 at the Stallings Town Hall.
