Providence High School's Brett Austin was picked in the first round, 54th overall, Monday by the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball's first-year-player draft.
The 54th selection falls in the first round of the supplemental draft, and Austin was the second catcher drafted overall and the 26th high school player selected.
Austin led the Panthers to a 23-3 record and a national ranking this season. The N.C. State signee was the Southwest 4A Player of the Year as a junior and this season carried a .537 batting average, hit 12 home runs and had 38 RBIs.
