Road closure: Runnymede Lane, between Barclay Downs Drive and Michael Baker Place, is closed until July 1 so Charlotte DOT workers can fix the sinkhole that's been plaguing drivers since the beginning of the month. Motorists are asked to use posted detours through Park, Fairview and Sharon roads. Myers Park High School can be accessed from the Colony Road entrance only. Charlotte Area Transit System buses will be affected.


Martial arts event: The Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy will present a history of martial arts from around the world and give a live demonstration 2-3 p.m. July 5 and 6 at the Matthews Library, 230 Matthews Station St. Children in first to fifth grades and their families are invited. South Charlotte

Summer schedule: To save money on utilities, most Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools and offices will be closed Fridays from June 20 to Aug. 11. The standard office hours will be 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Last summer's four-day workweek saved the district more than $500,000. Specific schools will be operating programs throughout the summer, and facilities used for athletics and band will be operational Aug. 1. Details: 980-343-3000.

Arboretum and Piper Glen

$1 summer movies: Regal Entertainment Group features G- or PG-rated movies for $1 Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Arboretum Stadium 12 Movie Theater, 8008 Providence Road, and on Thursdays at the Stonecrest Piper Glen Theater, 7824 Rea Road. Budget approved: The City Council has approved the 2012-13 budget, which includes a $3.3 million increase for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's budget; an 8.8 percent increase for water and sewer rates; a 6.5 percent increase for stormwater fees; restoring funding for the new street lights program; and the continued funding of ImaginOn. Race registration: Registration has opened for the Morrison YMCA's second annual Tri! Ballantyne. The triathlon will be held 7 a.m. July 16 at the Morrison YMCA, 9405 Bryant Farms Road. The race includes a 300-yard swim in the YMCA outdoor pool, a 12.7-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Proceeds will benefit the Morrison Family and Ballantyne Village YMCA's Community Support Campaign. Registration costs are $55 for individuals and $85 for relay teams. Details:
