Vaccinations: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is encouraging parents to check with health-care providers to make sure they are aware of the vaccinations students must have before Aug. 25 for the 2011-12 school year. Call 704-336-6500 to make an appointment with the Mecklenburg County Health Department at Northwest Health Department or Southeast Health Department.

Providence Day

Costa Rica: Upper school students recently went to Costa Rica through the PDS Global Studies Office. During the trip, students learned about the country's biodiversity, explored a volcano and rain forest, examined deforestation issues and more. They also participated in service work such as clearing trails of invasive plants around the Las Cruces Biological Station.

Ardrey Kell High

Summer hours: The office will be open Monday-Thursday. Registration hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Wednesday by appointment only. Contact Connie Wallace at 980-343-0860, ext. 233.

Driver education certificates: Education certificates may be dropped off in the front office, and a driver eligibility certificate will be ready the next day for pickup; certificates will not be ready on the spot.

Providence High

Top CMS high school: In a list of "best high schools in America" complied by Newsweek magazine, Providence has placed above all other CMS schools, at 186th place. Rankings were complied using a variety of data including graduation rates, AP courses offered, average AP/IB scores and average SAT/ACT scores. The next-highest CMS school came in at 439th place. South Charlotte Middle

New principal: CMS recently announced that Waddell Principal Lisa Bowen will become principal of South Charlotte Middle, as current Principal Christine Waggoner is retiring.

Charlotte Christian

New faculty: Theresa Kasay will join the faculty July 1 as the new director of academics. She will be responsible for curriculum development and implementation for junior kindergarten through 12th grade. Lori Anne Sword will also join the faculty July 1as the director of theater. She was a fine arts educator for 10 years in Florida and has served in both public and private schools as a fine arts teacher, music instructor and director in North Carolina.

National Merit: Andrew Younts has been selected a winner of the National Merit $2,500 scholarship. He joins Catherine Jarrett as the second winner from Charlotte Christian.

CyberKids Robotics

Members needed: CyberKids Robotics is accepting Robotics Competition Team applications in Mecklenburg County for the upcoming school year. Robotics Teams consist of six to eight students. Rising fourth- through eighth-graders are eligible. Registration and practice fees are $26 per month per team member.
