Math competition: David Lucia, Jack Munley and Kevin Lee, students at Providence Day, took part in the 36th Annual American Regions Mathematics League Meet in Athens, Ga. North Carolina's A1 team won first place at their regional site and placed third overall in the combined nation rankings.
Outstanding blog: Providence Day School's Middle School News Blog (pdsblogs.org/msnews) recently received recognition from Edublogs. The student-run blog was recognized as an "Outstanding Student-Produced News Blog" in June. Edublogs provides hosting and custom blogging platforms for individual teachers, school districts and students. Edublogs awards blogs for various distinctions as a means to promote and demonstrate the importance of social media. and create resources for educators.

Culinary Arts Show: Cafeteria manager Christy Davis won an honorable mention in the North Carolina School Nutrition Association annual meeting and culinary arts show in Greensboro. Her honorable mention was for the "Decorating Cakes" category. The theme was "Rock and Roll."
Cross and Crown
Open house: Cross And Crown Weekday School in Matthews will introduce their new preschool program and director Dana Blakeslee on July 13 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The school offers a half-day preschool program for children ages 2 through 5. The program provides a structured environment, while making learning fun. Parents who sign up for fall enrollment at the open house will receive a discount. www.crossandcrown.org.
Nutrition winner: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Child Nutrition Quality Auditor Emilio Graf won first place for the "Salad Entrée" category in the North Carolina School Nutrition Association annual meeting and culinary arts show in Greensboro.
Middle school sports: CMS will offer a limited program of middle school sports in 2011-2012. The district has identified funding for the program from high school and middle school participation fees, a $1 surcharge on high school ticket sales and community donations. The sports that will be offered are boys' football, girls' cheerleading and girls' volleyball in the fall; boys' basketball, girls' basketball and girls' cheerleading in the winter, and track and field for boys and girls in the spring. Softball, baseball, soccer and golf will not be offered.
Ghost walk: Scott Clark Toyota will hold its second 3-D Ghost Walk in October to raise funds for local elementary school's PTAs. For $5, children will gain entry to the ghost walk, receive a bag of candy, hot dog and a drink. Last year, more than $12,000 was raised for eight elementary schools. This year's goal is $100,000.
