Red Lobster might be coming to Matthews.
Darden Restaurants, a Fortune 400 company, said it hopes to construct a $3 million Red Lobster restaurant next to the former Bob Evans Restaurant at 9700 East Independence Blvd., across from Windsor Square.
The company must get the zoning on the property changed from industrial to business. The land is owned by Morningstar Office, which originally planned to build mini-warehouses there.
Darden officials says they don't release a timetable or details about a restaurant's opening until all necessary permits are in place, but Darden's Brett Mashchak says the restaurant will employee about 120 when it's up and running.
Commissioners held a public hearing on the request last Monday. It now goes to the planning board for its recommendation and could come back to commissioners for decision as early as Aug. 8.
Matthews Commissioners also held a public hearing on Christ Covenant's request to allow a driveway on property at 10822 and 10812 Monroe Road, site of the former Colchester Nursery. The driveway would lead to Warner Park, the ball fields used by Covenant Day School and the church's SOAR program.
They say they need the additional drive for safety.
