Young golfer has bright future on college level

Chad Cox has an easy smile and personality to match.

A competitive golfer with a winning record, Cox has a lot to smile about.

He was born in Charlotte and lives lives with his family in Mint Hill. "I've always enjoyed participating in sports," said Cox. "I play basketball and golf for my school, and played baseball until was 14."

A rising senior at Hickory Grove Christian, Cox has verbally committed to N.C. State where he will play golf.

At age 10, Cox started hitting range balls with his dad at Pine Lake Country Club. Cox began playing for his high school team when he was in the seventh grade.

He won the state tournament as a freshman. Cox competed in the Junior Inner Club Tournaments, where golfers play members of other clubs, then moved on to the American Junior Golf Association where he competed against golfers 19 and younger.

"I'm having so much fun with it all," he said.

"My family and relatives come out to watch me, so I like to play well for them. My brother Chase, who's a decent golfer, has occasionally caddied for me, too."

Cox has made friends with top golfers his age from all over the U.S.

Cox strives for accuracy and is good at hitting the long ball. He has a 3.5 handicap.

Cox has already qualified for the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Pointe Verde, Fla., beginning Aug. 31.

He'll also play in the Charlotte City Amateur beginning Aug. 12, so anyone who wants to catch this up and coming golfer in person will have the chance.
