Tourism grants: The town is accepting applications for Tourism Grants.
The grants are available to Matthews organizations that sponsor tourism or tourism-related programs and activities, including art and cultural programs, events and festivals. Past organizations that have received tourism funds include the Chili Cook-off Festival, Matthews Alive!, baseball tournaments and Matthews Playhouse events.
Applications are available at www.matthewsnc.com and are due by Aug. 19.

Planning Board: For the next 30 days, the town is accepting applications for the Mint Hill Planning Board.
Applicants should live in Mint Hill town limits or in its sphere of influence.
The Planning Board studies zoning requests, conditional-use requests and other requests involving the use of town land. It then makes recommendations to commissioners, who have the final decision.
Planning Board meetings are held the third Monday of each month, and committee members are expected to attend commissioners meetings - the second or fourth Thursdays of each month - when public hearings are scheduled.

Night out: The Mint Hill Police Department will host National Night Out at Mint Hill Park on Fairview, 8850 Fairview Road, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 2.
The event is free and open to all residents. Officers say this an opportunity to get to know your neighbors and find out how to make a difference in your community.
