New uses for schools: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools recently announced how empty school buildings will be used this year. The former Smith International Academy of Languages building, 1600 Tyvola Road, will now be for district uses, including: the Family Application Center, magnet schools office, After School Enrichment program, Bright Beginnings, International Center, Exceptional Children (from Lincoln Heights), PreK-12 support and family support. The former Sedgefield Elementary/Family Life Application Center, 715 Hartford Ave, will be used by the Q Foundation, an online GED program.
Free round of golf: Teachers, police officers and firefighters can play 18 holes of golf for free with one paid round through Aug. 7 at the Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge, 10000 Ballantyne Commons Parkway. Grant opportunity: The town of Matthews is accepting Tourism Grant Applications from organizations that meet legal guidelines for attracting tourism to the town.
