Mummies need help: Discovery Place needs adult volunteers for Mummies of the World, which opens Nov. 11. The exhibit features 150 specimens and is the largest exhibition of mummies ever assembled. Volunteers are needed from Nov. 11, through April 8, 2012. Training will be provided; minimum commitment of 45 hours. Park Road

Intro computer class: The Shepherd's Center of Charlotte is offering an "Introduction to Computers" class on Tuesdays and Thursdays Aug. 9-Sept. 1 at the Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road. Each session of the four-week class is three hours, and topics include: Microsoft Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet and email. Senior volunteers teach the class. Cost is $50. "CMS' Challenges and Changes": The monthly Ballantyne Breakfast Club meeting will be 9 a.m. Aug. 13 in the Fairway ballroom of the Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge, 10000 Ballantyne Commons Parkway. Guest speakers include: CMS School Board Chairman Eric Davis, CMS District 6 Representative Tim Morgan and other local school officials, as well as County Commission Chairperson Jennifer Roberts. Topics include: the county budget, the CMS budget, testing policies, the search for a new superintendant and the slate of candidates running for at-large seats.
