Vaccinations: The Tdap vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough), is now required for all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students who enter the sixth grade and have not had a booster shot in the past five years. Students new to CMS must show proof their immunizations are current on the first day of school. Details: www.cms.k12.nc.us.

Movie by moonlight: Smithfield Elementary families are invited to watch the movie "Rio" by moonlight 8:15 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Smithfield Elementary field, 3200 Smithfield Church Road. Student art exhibit: The Junior Classical League is exhibiting student art in the foyer of the South County Regional Library, 5801 Rea Road, through Aug. 31. JCL is an organization of middle and high school students designed to encourage an interest in and appreciation of ancient Greece and Rome. Details: 704-416-6600.

South Charlotte

Fundraiser: The second annual Big South Conference 5K Road Race will be 8 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Blakeney Shopping Center. The race raises money for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union counties. Cost is $20 for registration before Sept. 30 and $25 after Sept. 30. Register online at www.bigsouth5k.com. Participants can select a middle school affiliation, and a percentage of their registration fees will be sent to that school's athletic booster club.
