Independence High School Band Director Chris Moreau recently submitted an application that netted the band a $2,000 Muzak Heart and Soul Foundation grant.
The grant from Muzak - now a part of Mood Media Corp. - will allow the Independence High School Band to sound better this year, as it will use the funds to purchase new instruments for the school.
The Muzak foundation's award was one of 15 grants handed among 120 applicants nationwide.
In the application, Moreau explained how some of the school's instruments are old and beyond repair.
"Over the past few years, we've been able to get most of our instruments in minimum playing order, but many really need to be replaced.
"We've had to duct tape some of the marching baritones for the instruments to work properly. Certain woodwinds we've repaired by using dental floss. You do what you have to do to play," said Moreau.
Moreau said he plans to use the grant to purchase a digital keyboard and amplifier, and to replace two marching baritones.
"We're very thankful for the grant from Muzak, and the advantages that it will afford all of our students," said Moreau.
