Young members sought: The Planning Board is seeking a student to provide a youthful perspective as it decides issues related to growth.
The student would be a nonvoting member of the board. If you are interested, you must be a town resident in high school. You also must be interested in exploring urban planning, public administration, political science or related local government fields as a career opportunity.

Pink Bow campaign: Members of the Ballantyne based BCC Rally, a grassroots Rally for the Cure organization that supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure, have launched their 2011 Pink Bow campaign.
The pink bows come in three sizes: 10-inch, 7-inch and 5-inch. All proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To order, visit www.bccrally.org.
Children of veterans: The N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs is reminding eligible students to apply for college scholarships available to children of North Carolina war veterans. The annual application deadline is March 1.
To qualify, the applicant must be a resident of North Carolina at the time of application. The veteran parent must have been a legal resident of North Carolina at the time of his or her entry into service. The applicant of an eligible veteran also must be a biologically related child, or adopted prior to age 15, who was born in North Carolina.

Balloon Derby: St. Matthew's Catholic School will hold its annual Balloon Derby at 2 p.m. Sept. 21 to honor the school's patron saint. The more than 650 students, faculty, parents and siblings are invited to participate. Every student will be given a balloon to release with a Bible verse attached. The school is at 11525 Elm Lane.
