In Indian Trail, they're calling it a game changer.
With much fanfare and a large crowd, local leaders broke ground last week on a 55,000-square-foot movie theater in Sun Valley Commons in Indian Trail.
As soon as the ceremony ended, equipment was scheduled to begin grading.
"I think this is going to be the start of something exciting in Union County," Herman Stone, owner of Stone Theatres, told the group assembled for the groundbreaking. "You won't have to leave this county again as far as entertainment because it's all going to be right here."
The project has been months in the making, with collaborations between developers, state leaders, the town of Indian Trail and the N.C. Department of Transportation.
"Our economic recovery has begun today in Indian Trail," said Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Goodall.
"We will welcome our neighbors in Mecklenburg County to come over and enjoy the finest theater in the region," he added.
The 14-screen multiplex will include 2,800 stadium seats with high-back, rocker seating, padded arm rests and cup holders and state-of-the-art projection and sound equipment.
Concessions will include Pizzeria Uno pizza, gourmet pretzels, hot dogs, nachos and soft drinks.
Developers envision shops and restaurants around the theater complex, and several restaurants that have signed on to the project will be announced soon.
Developer Dennis Moser, owner of The Moser Group, teared up as he talked about the project.
"This passion and emotion is what got us here today," he said. The Moser Group is working with Stone Theatres on the project.
The total cost of the project will be about $60 million, and Stone said the theater should open in May. He expects it to employ about 50 people.
Shopping for a Fiat?
A new dealership in Fort Mill has more than 70 Fiats in its inventory, including 14 colors and interiors.
The Mills Automotive Group recently opened the 4,500-square-foot "Stateline Fiat" next to Stateline Chrysler Jeep Dodge at 800 Gold Hill Road.
According to Fiat officials, this dealership will be the only Fiat facility in the Charlotte area.
