Volunteers needed: Charlotte's Thunder Road Marathon is recruiting volunteers for this year's race Nov. 12.

The following volunteer positions are needed Nov. 8-Nov. 12: expo support, information kiosks, packet distribution, registration, course monitors, signage help, T-shirt distribution, baggage area, start line assistant, finish line support, lead bike escort and driver assistance. "Slavery in the South": The Matthews Historical Foundation will present "Slavery in the South" on Sept. 27 at the Massey-Clark House, 232 North Trade St. The program, by public historian and historic interpreter Nicole Moore, will explore experiences from working conditions to family life. Author Michael Scoggins, historian and director of the Southern Revolutionary War Institute, will also attend. Southern Gourmet will cater a reception starting 6:30 pm. Free, open to the public. ArtFest: The 26th annual ArtFest of Matthews is this weekend in front of town hall, 210 Matthews Station St. Produced by Matthews Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Presbyterian Hospital Matthews and featuring 50 artists and craftsmen, live entertainment, children's hands-on art area and a high school art scholarship competition. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 1 and noon-5 p.m. Oct. 2.
