Construction on the Autobell at the corner of Tyvola and Park roads could start as early as mid-November, said Autobell CEO and co-owner Carl Howard, after getting a green light on the project from the Charlotte City Council at last week's rezoning meeting.
The car wash could be open by April or May, Howard said.
The Autobell will be unlike any of the 61 car washes the company has built. It will have columns, landscaping, a fountain and a green roof covered in plants.
Residents in adjacent SouthGate Condominiums and SouthPark Corners were opposed to the rezoning petition, which was filed by CAH Holdings, LLC and involved changing the 1.82-acre lot from residential to commercial.
Many residents of nearby Madison Park - down Tyvola from the parcel of land - initially opposed but ultimately supported the plan, saying it fit well with the SouthPark image.
Council members also voted to approve Bissell Companies' 520-acre expansion that would add 1 million square feet of office space, 200 hotel rooms and 600 residential units to the Ballantyne Corporate Park area.
Bissell is still negotiating with the city over $11 million in road improvements, including a bridge over Interstate 485 to link North Community House Road to Endhaven Lane.
Bissell has agreed to fund the road improvements if the company will be reimbursed with 45 percent of the new property tax revenue.
