Ballantyne

Ovarian cancer awareness: Raise awareness for ovarian cancer at the "Teal Next Year" spa mixer 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge, 10000 Ballantyne Commons Parkway. (Teal is the color for ovarian cancer.) Enjoy light bites, live entertainment, a cash bar and mini spa services for purchase, including chair massages and teal polish changes. Cost is $20 person. Matthews

Art festival: The 26th annual ArtFest of Matthews will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 1 and noon-5 p.m. Oct. 2 in historic downtown Matthews, on the Village Green at Matthews Station Street. More than 50 artists and craftsmen from across the Southeast will display and sell their artwork at the two-day juried show. There will be a children's art area with pottery lessons, a high school art scholarship competition in the train station, live music and local restaurant specials. Junior Ambassador Program: Blumenthal Performing Arts Junior Ambassador Program, which is designed to educate and inspire teens about volunteerism and the arts, is accepting applications for the 2011-12 school year. Local students attend monthly personal development workshops, while honing leadership, workforce and life skills. Seniors also have the opportunity to compete for the annual Syl Bartos Scholarship. Applicants must be juniors or seniors in high school with a 3.0 minimum GPA and parental support.
