Restaurant news: Special meals featured for fall


A new autumn dinner menu is here and there is plenty to choose from. Pulled rotisserie chicken or Baja fish tacos, Texas beef brisket, Canadian salmon, and a hickory grilled filet mignon as well as starters such as baked brie and a smoked chicken and apricot artisan pizza. Make sure to check out the sides to share: roasted autumn vegetables, collard greens, roasted butternut squash and more.

On Oct. 5 take advantage of the patio at Harper's for taps and tapas at 6 p.m. Chef Dar will provide food and beer pairings for $25 per person. Reservations, 704-366-6688.

Mimosa Grill

Join Mimosa's Executive Chef Jon Fortes for a special five-course menu and a variety of bourbons at the second annual Bourbon Bash Dinner Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Selections from the menu include: sweet potato torchon with foie gras butter and citrus spiced gastrique paired with Old Forester Signature, huckleberry sage brushed squab with spaghetti squash, maple bacon and quince salad paired with Jack Daniels Single Barrel and brown sugar glazed pork cheeks with sweet corn and bread pudding, Carr Valley smoked cheddar and cracklins served with Woodford Reserve. A seasonal dessert of Pumpkin Soufflé with "JD" honey caramel crème Anglaise and candied pumpkin seeds will round out the meal and will be paired with Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey. The Power Couple Sundays promotion is worth a look: three courses for $99. Choose from salads to start, an 8-ounce filet mignon or signature crab cake for an entrée and a variety of sides and desserts. PMC Chili Cook Off

The eighth annual Plaza Midwood-Chantilly area chili cook off is happening Oct. 8 on Central Avenue in the MMR Racing parking lot. All levels of competitors from local restaurants and businesses as well as individual cooks will prepare their variations of chili beginning at noon. Chef Liz from Mert's Heart and Soul will be competing. She has just recently won the Green Market Cookie Crumble Bake Off with her Cherry White Chocolate Cookies. A raffle, homemade desserts and live music is included in the entry fee. Adults and kids 6 and older are $10, a donation is requested for children younger than 5. Proceeds from the event go to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

Highland Brewing Company

Feel like a quick fall road trip to sample some local beers? Highland Brewing Company in Asheville offers tours and tastings Monday through Saturdays at 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays live music and food are on tap in their tasting and stage area or outside in the meadow area, weather permitting. Check the website before you go for closings due to private events and holidays.

On Oct. 1, from 4-8 p.m., Highland Brewing will hold a Pink Brew Release Party with live gypsy music from The Blood Gypsies and food by Kyte's Catering. A pink, light, wheat beer with beet juice and hibiscus will be featured. For each pint sold, 50 cents goes to local nonprofit Beauty through Cancer.
