Sports brief: Providence Day inducts former athletes, coach into hall of fame

Providence Day School inducted five former athletes and a former coach into the Charger Hall of Fame Sept. 24.

Inductees included: Jeff West (1983), who played football, wrestled and helped the baseball team to the 1993 state championship; Charlie Porter (1984), who played football, baseball and ran track and also played football at North Carolina; Mark Schuler (1996) an all-conference and all-state basketball player; Erika (Proko) Hamilton (1999), an all-conference and all-state tennis player who was a six-time NCAA Division III All-American at Washington and Lee; Ryan Carson (2000), a basketball player that helped the Chargers to two state titles and was named all-conference and all-state; and Barbara Nelson, who was the head girls' basketball coach for 21 seasons, compiling a 437-176 record and seven state championships. Nelson is now head coach at Wingate University.
