Wait to text campaign
W82TXT events: In an effort to inform teens and adults of the dangers of texting while driving and the potential ramifications, Fogle Insurance Group and Auto-Owners Insurance, are hosting W82TXT events in high school driver's education classes.
Fogle Group is working with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to schedule talks.
According to Michelle Fogle-Sizemore, the talks include a video, produced by AT&T, in which family and friends talk about high school students who died in car crashes where texting was involved. Also discussed are the repercussions to students who survived crashes caused by texting.
Center opens: The Horne Performing Arts Center at Charlotte Latin opened on Aug. 24.
The 31,000-square-foot facility houses music classrooms, practice rooms, a black box theater and a visual arts gallery.
The $1 million naming gift was donated by Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Horne Jr. and children.
Open house: Anami Montessori will hold an open house on Oct. 2, 1-3 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
Parents can observe classrooms and hear explanations of teaching methods. Details: www.anamimontessori.org.
Charlotte hunger drive
Hunger drive: Oct. 3- Nov. 16, students from 17 Charlotte high schools will participate in the second annual Charlotte Student Hunger Drive.
The schools will receive cash awards based on amounts collected.
In addition, "The Food Lion MVP Award," will be given to a student showing leadership during the campaign.
That student will receive a $250 scholarship.
Makeover: Shamrock Gardens was one of 42 schools nationwide to receive a library renovation, including 2,000 new books. The schools received iPads, new furniture, carpet and shelves.
The Target School Library Makeover program is sponsored by Target in conjunction with The Heart of America Foundation.
Each student at Shamrock, and his or her siblings, will receive seven new books for home libraries.
