Theater performances: Charlotte Christian's ACT 1 drama team will present a fall double-feature including "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Children of Eden." The shows will run for three days from Oct. 20 to 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7-$10 each and available in advance at www.carolinatix.org, 704-366-5657 or at the door.
Commended students: Seniors Evan Marcey and Amanda Panousis have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Artists honored: Senior artists won awards at the 26th annual Matthews ArtFest held Oct. 1-2. Julie Morrison won the first-place senior scholarship of $500 and Monica Galletto won the People's Choice Award, along with an honorable mention.
Writing award: Senior Evan Marcey has been selected one of eight winners of the 2011 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards for Superior Writing.
Congratulations: Madeline Ives, Patrick O'Brien and Zachariah Sachee were nominated for the Bryan Scholars Program at Davidson College. Carolyn Bahar has been chosen the CCHS Carolina's Carrousel representative for this year's Thanksgiving Day Parade and scholarship participation. O'Brien was named a North Carolina Junior Scholar and awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Elon University.
National Achievement: Charlotte Latin senior Aseda Ghartey-Tagoe has been named a semifinalist in the 48th annual National Achievement Scholarship program. She is among 1,600 black American high school seniors to compete for scholarships totaling more than $2.4 million.
Willy Wonka: The theater department will present the middle school production of "Willy Wonka Junior" Oct. 21 and 22, www.covenantday.org.
Open house: There will be an admissions open house for parents for grades TK-12 9:30 a.m. Oct. 26 at the school at 800 Fullwood Lane in Matthews: 704-847-2385.
Carrousel winner: Senior board President Najee Brown won in the Carrousel Pageant competition Sept. 23. Six senior East Meck girls competed in evening wear, question-and-answer and costume sections. The girls were scored on how well they presented themselves to the audience and judges. Brown will go on to represent East Meck in a citywide competition for a scholarship prize.
Art award: Former Providence student and recent graduate of Moore College of Art and Design, Victoria May, received the Visionary Women Award Scholarship, the Fred Acker Achievement Award in Graphic Design and the Philadelphia Water Color Society Award in Fine Art while at Moore.

Barbecue: The annual Frank Ponce barbecue will be available for pickup Oct. 21 in front of the gym 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. for $9 per plate or pound of chicken or pork.
