Fundraiser: The Charlotte Speed Demons, a women's flat-track roller derby team, and Inner Peaks Climbing Center are teaming up to raise money for Special Olympics North Carolina 6-9 p.m. Oct. 15. Inner Peaks, 9535 Monroe Road, is offering unlimited climbing, music and food to people who give $10 or more. The fundraiser is part of the Special Olympics' Over the Edge promotion, where every $1,000 raised by a local business earns one person the chance to rappel 35 stories down The Vue Charlotte skyscraper in uptown on Oct. 29. Teen photo contest: In honor of Teen Read Week, teens ages 12-18 can enter the "Picture it @ Your Library" photo contest by creating visual versions of their favorite book titles. Only photos taken between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 are eligible. To enter, pick up the entry form for the local and national contest at the information desk of the Matthews Branch Library, 230 Matthews Station St., or email email@example.com with the name of the forms you're requesting in the subject line. Teens can enter as many times as they like. Deadline is 4:45 p.m. Oct. 31. The Matthews Branch winner will be announced Nov. 7, and the national winner will be announced Dec. 1.
Get healthy: The Arthritis Foundation, Mid-Atlantic Region, in collaboration with the Levine Senior Center, will present a Senior Health Exposition Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Levine Senior Center, 1050 DeVore Lane in Matthews. Food drive: On Oct. 22, students at the Sangrock Black Belt World, 124 West John St. in Matthews, will hold a food drive called Kicks for Cans at the school. Opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. with Jim Taylor, mayor of Matthews, to officiate. It's chili time: The Matthews Rotary Club will host its Annual Bluegrass Festival and Chili Cook-off on Oct. 22 at Stumptown Park in downtown Matthews from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $ 5 and includes sampling of chili to choose your favorite.
