New firefighters: The town has two new firefighters: William Davis and David Livarchuk.

Davis is a native of Syracuse, N.Y. He began volunteering as a firefighter in Waxhaw in 2009, where he and his wife and son live. Livarchuk is from Albany, N.Y. He moved to Charlotte with his family when he was 14. He joined the Matthews Fire & EMS Department last year as a volunteer.


Student applications: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year.

New-student enrollment is for children entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarteners who did not attend a CMS pre-kindergarten program or older students new to CMS. Students must be enrolled by Dec. 2 to be eligible for the first magnet lottery, open Jan. 6-Feb. 13. Families enrolled by the deadline will receive an instruction sheet in the mail the first week of January. Families who plan to send their child to their assigned home school do not have to register by Dec. 2 but are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible. Children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to be considered for kindergarten or 4 on or before Aug. 31 to be considered for pre-kindergarten. To enroll, families must provide three documents to show proof of residency. Basketball fundraiser: On Nov. 10, Providence Road Sundries will donate 10 percent of all dinner receipts to Playbook for Life, the organization that coordinates 277 teams in a church basketball league. The funds will provide $40 scholarships anonymously to players lacking financial resources.
