NCDOT travel study: Over the next few months, a random selection of Mecklenburg County residents will be contacted by phone to participate in a regional household travel survey. Participants will keep a travel diary for one day. Results will help plan transportation improvements. Details:

Freedom Park

"Love Lights": There will be thousands of luminaries around Freedom Park Lake 5-9 p.m. Nov. 19 for the Pilot Club of Charlotte's "Love Lights" fundraiser for Alzheimer's research. To have luminaries lit in memory of loved ones, donate to Pilot International Foundation, 2419 Hatherly Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28209. Include the names for each luminary. Proceeds go to Duke University School of Medicine's Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Rain date is Nov. 20. Details: 704-814-4567.


Help homeless: Bright Blessings, a nonprofit organization serving homeless children and families in Charlotte, will host its annual "Stuff the Stockings" event from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 13 at 608-A Matthews Mint Hill Road. Attendees are encouraged to bring small gifts and treats, which they will use to fill 600 holiday stockings and winter fun bags. Suggested items listed by age group are available at


Camera class: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will host an On Camera Acting Class for adults 55 and older at the Elon Recreation Center, 11401 Ardrey Kell Road. The class covers all aspects of acting for the camera. Classes will be held on Thursdays, Nov. 17-Dec. 15 (excluding Nov. 24) from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $75; registration is limited. Give blood: The town of Pineville's community blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, The Hut, 413 Johnston Drive. As part of the Puppies for Patient program, donate blood and sign a gift tag that will be attached to a stuffed puppy and delivered to children in area hospitals.
