Rocking chair art: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools visual arts department collaborated with Wells Fargo to paint 12 giant rocking chairs that have been placed at locations around downtown. The chairs were auctioned off with all proceeds going toward the Arts and Science Council to provide arts experiences for students. South Charlotte participating schools were East Meck, South Meck, Ardrey Kell and Myers Park.

Project helps boys and girls: Campbell Hallett, 16, of Charlotte, recently earned his Eagle Scout award. Hallett is in Troop 17 and as part of his Eagle Scout project, he helped restore the library/learning room at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Charlotte. Hallett is a student at the residential Woodberry Forest School in Virginia.

Charlotte Christian

Open house: Charlotte Christian will host an admissions open house for all grades 1 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Flenniken Dining Hall on campus. To make reservations, 704-366-5657, ext. 6503 or admissions@charchrist.com. Details: www.charlottechristian.com.

Charlotte Country Day

Canned food success: Charlotte Country Day School's canned food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank on Oct. 19 yielded 5,052 pounds of food, breaking their record from the last 11 years of Can-Do Day. According to Second Harvest, CCDS has provided the equivalent of 3,368 individual meals.

Covenant Day

Priority registration: The priority period for applications from siblings and children of Christ Covenant Church members for the 2012-13 school year runs through Nov. 14, www.covenantday.org for applications.

East Meck High

Band winners: At a recent marching band competition at East Rowan High School, the Marching Eagles won Grand Champion. They also won first place in music, general ensemble and visual effects.

Friends School of Charlotte

Weekly open house: The Friends School of Charlotte, an independent school serving transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, is inviting parents to an open house every Thursday morning from 9-10:30 a.m. The Quaker school is open to families of all backgrounds. Myers Park High

Kickball fundraiser: Myers Park DECA is holding a fundraiser for the charity CureSearch. The goal is to raise money to help find the cure to cancer in memory of Sloan Chambers. The tournament is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 12 at Freedom Park. To donate, visit www.kick-it.org/events/kickin-it-for-sloan and click "Donate to this Event."

Marching band honors: In their final regional competition, the Myers Park Marching Mustangs claimed first place drum majors for the entire competition were given to senior Michael Fox and junior Maddie Lenphear. The band placed second in percussion and visual effects for the 3A class, second overall in 3A and fifth overall.

Providence High

Golf: The women's golf team recently qualified for states, making it the first golf team at PHS to make it that far. Senior Michelle Fogarty and juniors Melissa Manderbach and Devon Gerenza qualified by finishing fourth in the Western North Carolina region.

South Meck High

College essay help: After school help for writing an effective college essay will be offered by the English department at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 10, 17, 21 and Dec. 1, 8, 15.

"Public art" by Charlotte painter Sharon Dowell is now on display at Gallery@LOOM located downtown at 120 Academy Street. LOOM will hold an art reception for Dowell’s exhibit 7 - 9 p.m. on August 11. Dowell will be there to discuss her work. Children’s art activities will take place next door.
