Drama awards: The Charlotte Christian drama team won awards at the North Carolina Theatre Conference. For the production of Children of Eden, the ACT 1 team won Regional Distinguished Play Award and Excellence in Production Design and Lori Anne Sword, Mindy Damon and Linda Booth won individual awards for excellence in directing. For "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Chad Damon and Bethany Klinect won excellence in acting.
Challenge grant: JV Washam Elementary School was recently awarded a "Challenge Grant" in the amount of $45,000 from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. The school must raise $45,000 to receive the grant. Anticipated use of the funds will include an outdoor learning center, iPad technology for student use and completion of the playground area. Engineering awards: Charlotte Latin Hawks won top awards in Middle School Engineering competition. During the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Food Factor Challenge, held Nov. 5 on the Charlotte Latin campus, teams of students researched real world scientific problems and designed and built original robots. Guest speaker, Bruce Springs, Goodrich Corp. VP - Military Support, talked of his work experience at Air Force Headquarters in the Pentagon. The Hawks II team won first place for Robot Performance Award and will advance to the NC FIRST LEGO League competition Jan. 21.
Band awards: The Charlotte Catholic High School marching band placed third in visual performance, overall effect captions and overall class at the Oct.29 competition at Ardrey Kell High.
Gift awarded: Back Creek Christian Academy received a $500 gift from the Sams Mart, 485/University City Blvd., through the ExxonMobile Educational Alliance.
Help children: Clover School District sponsors Child Find, which aids families in identifying children with special needs, 803-810-8400.
Teacher aid: The Rock Hill School Board received $10,000 under a new initiative. The district has begun selling ads related to education on service vehicles in an effort to save teaching positions.
Fort Mill district: Gold Hill Elementary School is holding a clothing drive through March 5. Coats, gloves, hats and scarves accepted at the school.
School wins money: New Town Elementary won $1,000 from Windstream Communication's "Classroom Caravan." The money will be used for school improvements.
National Merit: Marvin Ridge High announced 14 seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program: Jessica Arnold, Jon Attridge, Lauren Deville, Sarah Every, Ronald Franklin, Rachel Gartz, Joseph Hatala, Gordon Holzberg, John McClendon, Megan Mitchell, Jessica Robinson, Sean Van Gurp, Brett Ward and David Weidman. Commended Students placed in the top 5 percent of students nationwide.
