Matthews

Dinner auction: The Matthews Free Medical Clinic hosted its third annual Hearts and Hands Together Dinner Auction on Nov. 5 at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant in SouthPark. The event raised $30,000. The clinic, staffed primarily by volunteer physicians and nurses, has been providing free health care to the medically under-served and uninsured individuals in Mecklenburg and Union counties for seven years. "The Nutcracker": Matthews Ballet presents "The Nutcracker" on Nov. 26-27 and Dec. 3-4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m.; Sunday performances are 3 p.m. The ballet is at the Matthews Community Center, 100 McDowell St. in Matthews. Pineville

Oil painting: The Civic & Cultural Arts Center of Pineville is offering oil painting classes. Classes are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the center, 316 Main St., Pineville. The classes will be offered through the end of January. Cost is $20 for the first night and $10 for subsequent nights. For information: 704-889-2434.

Parrot calendar: The 2012 Companion Parrots Re-homed calendars are now on sale for $15. With the theme "Birds at the Beach," the calendars feature some of CPR's rescued and re-homed parrots photographed by CPR volunteer Debbie Foster. All proceeds go toward medical care for the birds. Calendars can be purchased at Parrot University, 321 South Polk St., Pineville, by calling 704-889-2325 or emailing info@companionparrots.org.

Preservation Award: The town of Pineville said it was recently presented with the Preservation Excellence Award by Historic Charlotte, an organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation in the Charlotte area. Pineville officials were honored for the town's efforts in preserving the Mill Village and Historic Downtown area.

Late last year Pineville's Commercial District was nominated for a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. That district, which includes the following buildings: 310-333 Main Street and 105-109 Dover Street, along with Pineville's Mill Village, were officially accepted into the register program in August.

South Charlotte

Trash and recycling: Garbage and recycling schedules for the three southern towns will be a little different this week. There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Thanksgiving Day. In Mint Hill, Thursday garbage and recycling pickup will be Friday. In Matthews, some residents can expect a one-day delay, with Thursday and Friday pickup moved to Friday and Saturday. In Pineville, garbage pickup will remain on Wednesday, but recycling pickup will be moved to Friday.

Education

Practice SAT Offered: Teens looking to build their test-taking confidence may register for a free, full-length practice SAT exam. The practice exam will be offered at the Monroe Library on Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., courtesy of Waxhaw Sylvan Learning. Registration is required. Call 704-283-8184 ext. 240 or email tspeasl@union.lib.nc.us to secure a spot. The library is at 316 E. Windsor St., Monroe.

A follow-up session will be offered on Dec. 13 from 6-7 p.m. at the Monroe library. Participants will receive their scores and learn testing success strategies and tips from an expert instructor.

Waxhaw

Professional Development Program: Tiffany Brown of Waxhaw Elementary School recently attended a seminar held at the N.C. Center for the Advancement of Teaching, which provides professional development programming for our state's teachers.

Indian Trail

Parade Grand Marshal Chosen: Union West Rotary has named Jon Wilson, host of FOX News Rising's Wilson's World, as the Grand Marshal for the seventh annual Indian Trail Christmas Parade Dec. 3. The parade starts at 3 p.m., rain or shine,

The parade featuring floats from Indian Trail businesses and organizations. It will start on Indian Trail Road and extend from the U.S. Post Office to Indian Trail Elementary School. Details: 704-821-2960 or visit www.rotaryclubofunionwest.org/.
