Town hall meeting: North Carolina Speaker of the House Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, will hold a town hall meeting 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at Central Piedmont Community College Levine Campus, 2800 Campus Ridge Road. Rep. Bill Brawley also will be there. Tillis will make comments then answer questions. For information, call Tillis' office: 919-733-3451.

Holiday stroll: The annual Downtown Matthews Holiday Stroll is from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 8. Check in at the Depot, 210 Matthews Station St., or The Reid House, 134 West John St., and pay $5 for a button and a map (children younger than 12 are free). All participating businesses will serve holiday treats. Get your map stamped at each location. All completed maps will be entered into a drawing for a prize. Details: www.matthewschamber.org. All proceeds benefit the Matthews Historical Foundation.

Singing Christmas Tree: The 57th annual Singing Christmas Tree returns with a brand new show. The event will be 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 and 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at Ovens Auditorium, 2700 E. Independence Blvd. Tickets: $19-$31. There also will be a Singing Christmas Tree for kids ages 3-8; two shows are scheduled, for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Dec. 10 at Ovens Auditorium. Tickets are $10-$18. Olde Providence: The Charlotte Speed Demons want the students at Olde Providence Elementary School to have playground equipment, and they need your help. On Dec. 8, several players will join students at Kate's Skating Rink for an open-skate session and roller derby demonstration. The event is open to the public, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the school's playground fund. The two-hour open session begins 6:30 p.m., with the roller derby demo starting at 7:15 p.m. Kate's Skating Rink is at 14500 Independence Blvd., Indian Trail. Details: www.charlottespeeddemons.com.

"Public art" by Charlotte painter Sharon Dowell is now on display at Gallery@LOOM located downtown at 120 Academy Street. LOOM will hold an art reception for Dowell’s exhibit 7 - 9 p.m. on August 11. Dowell will be there to discuss her work. Children’s art activities will take place next door.
