Student Hunger Drive
High-collecting schools: Providence High School, Ardrey Kell High and East Mecklenburg High collected more than 5,000 pounds of food each for the Student Hunger Drive. For their efforts, each school received a $100 award.
Beverly Woods Elementary
Lego competition: Two teams of fifth-grade students from Beverly Woods Elementary School competed in this year's regional First Lego League tournament Nov. 12 at Cannon School. Beverly Woods Cheddar Cheese Heads team won an award for best presentation and has been selected as an alternate to the state competition on Jan. 21.
Honors band: Charlotte Christian students Wes Foskey and Chris McCormick have been chosen to participate in the select Winthrop Invitational Honors Band.
Water for Haiti: Charlotte Latin's Nov. 22 Thanksgiving Assembly marked the culmination of the annual All-School Service Project. This year, the school raised approximately $10,000 for water.org to build a clean-water well in Haiti.
First place: Charlotte Latin's WorldQuest team won first place in the Academic WorldQuest competition sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Charlotte. Four Latin team members will represent Charlotte in the national level of the WorldQuest competition in Washington, D.C., on April 21. Team members are Roman Berens, Caroline Chiaroni, Aashna Desai, David Farrow, Meron Fessehaye, Ashley Medeiros, Tai Shaw and Matthew Sparks.
Christmas concert: The Covenant Day Music Department will present its annual Christmas Concert Dec. 10 and 11, 7 p.m. at the church, 800 Fullwood Lane, Matthews. The full orchestra and choirs will be present.
Thanksgiving gifts: Lansdowne Elementary School students in Stephanie Forte's class wrote letters and made handmade turkeys to show gratitude to their families this Thanksgiving. In appreciation of teachers like Forte, Providence Road Church of Christ provided Lansdowne teachers with tote bags filled with school supplies and Target gift certificates.
Olde Providence Elementary
Skating for equipment: At 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, several Speed Demons will have an open skate session and roller derby demonstration at Kate's Skating Rink, 14500 Independence Blvd., Indian Trail. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Olde Providence playground fund. The two-hour session begins at 6:30 p.m. with the derby demo starting at 7:15 p.m. The event costs $4 and includes skate rental.
A high note: The 2011 SMHS Sabre Regiment competed in four marching band competitions this fall and won awards including: first place drum major, first place percussion, second place color guard and third place class AA and class AAA. They finished the season receiving eighth place overall out of 20 bands and qualifying for the Finals at BandBEAT hosted by Gardner Webb University.
Art honors freedom: In the 2011 Freedom Foundation Patriotic Art Contest, Lee Da Sol earned first place and Michael Young earned second place.
Charlotte Country Day
Goodwill collection: Charlotte Country Day School will partner with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont for a school-based collection drive. The public is welcome to bring donations to the school's Cannon Campus, located at 1440 Carmel Road, on Dec. 7 and 8 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
