Holiday concert: The Matthews Concert Band will present a free holiday concert 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Matthews Community Center, 100 McDowell St., with musical commentary by Ken Conrad. Details:


New YMCA lockers: The Harris YMCA men's adult locker room is undergoing renovations this weekend, including new lockers. The renovations are being done while the YMCA is closed. The room should be finished 5 a.m. Dec. 12.

College preparation: Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's annual college preparatory program, Operation College Launch, will present two programs Dec. 17. Independence Library will host an event at 2 p.m. on "How to Pay for College," a workshop led by a representative from the College Foundation of North Carolina. Another event scheduled at 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at ImaginOn features "Writing A Winning Scholarship Essay."

Members from the Latin American Coalition will share techniques about writing impressive scholarship essays. Admission is free. Details:

Seeking photos: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund is leading a "The National Call for Photos" campaign to gather images of the men and women whose names are engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

There are several ways to submit photos. People can take photos to their local FedEx office where they will be scanned and uploaded; go to to upload the photo themselves; or mail a high-quality, 8-by-10 print of your photo along with the submission form available at to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Attn: Call for Photos, 2600 Virginia Ave. NW, Suite 104, Washington, D.C. 20037.
