New Year's Eve: Looking for a unique New Year's Eve night out? Try solving a soap opera murder mystery at Matthews Playhouse's ninth annual Opening Night Matthews, Dec. 31, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The event is at Matthews Community Center, 100 McDowell St. East.

"The Annual Porcelain Bowl Awards is the setting as the soap opera divas and gents from 'As The World Burns,' 'Mental Hospital' and 'The Dumb and The Restless' gather for a night of glamour. Drama and laughter fill the show until one of the actors is murdered. Work along with the detective as he looks for clues to solve this "whodunit." Tickets are $10 and available at the Matthews Community Center Box Office, online at www.matthewsplayhouse.com or at the door one hour prior to each performance. Myers Park

Church honored: Myers Park Presbyterian Church recently received the International Solidarity Award for its outreach efforts in El Salvador. The church has partnered with Habitat for Humanity El Salvador on holistic improvements in the Getsemaní community for five years. Work has included constructing more than 60 homes. The church completed its 24th annual Habitat home in Charlotte's Grier Heights community last month as part of its partnership with the Adopt-A-Home program. Myers Park Presbyterian Church has a long-standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity and played a key role in founding the organization's Charlotte branch in 1983. Longer hours: Discovery Place will extend its hours Dec. 26-30 to accommodate holiday crowds anticipated at its exhibition Mummies of the World, the largest collection of real mummies and related artifacts ever assembled. The exhibition will offer last admission at 5 p.m. Discovery Place will remain open until 6 p.m. Mummies of the World is a timed-entry ticketed event. Advance reservations are recommended. Admission is $24 for adults; $18 for children ages 2-13; and, $20 for students with ID and seniors ages 60 or older. Discovery Place is located at 301 N. Tryon St., Charlotte.
