Magnet fair: CMS is hosting a district-wide Magnet Fair Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, 1430 Alleghany St. Representatives from all the magnet programs will be available, as well as staff from the English as a Second Language department, career and technical education, study abroad programs, Parent University and student assignment.
School health workers also will answer questions about required physical examinations and immunizations. Computers will be available so that families can complete the online student-assignment forms if they would like to participate in the CMS magnet lottery.

Tax help for seniors: The Shepherd's Center of Charlotte is offering a free Tax Aide Program for seniors 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Feb. 3 to April 12, at Atria Merrywood, 3600 Park Road. The program is offered in partnership with the AARP, and all tax returns will be filed electronically. Appointments will be scheduled during January, February and March until all slots are filled. Lecture series: Charlotte Country Day School is hosting the Great Decisions Lecture Series from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 14. Cost is $10 per lecture or $40 for the series. Topics for the weekly lectures from UNC Charlotte and Queens University of Charlotte professors include (in date order): Mexico, Promoting Democracy, Middle East Realignment, State of the Oceans, Exit from Iraq and Afghanistan, and Energy Geopolitics: Russia as an Energy Superpower.
