'No consolidation': The Matthews Town Board voted last week to oppose consolidation between Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte, following the Charlotte City Council's vote to establish a commission to study consolidation. "The local government structure of the town of Matthews includes experienced and dedicated elected officials and professional staff members who are able to work effectively and efficiently for the people of the town," said Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor in a press release. "We have seen no evidence that bigger government is better."

Face-lift: Renovations are underway at the former Agriculture and Bradford Clinic Buildings. The former Agriculture Building is located in front of the Matthews Community Center and will be utilized for additional programs and classes offered by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department. Renovations include up fitting the rooms on the first and second floors, the addition of restrooms and an elevator. The Bradford Clinic will get restrooms to the rear of the building and a new roof. The restrooms will be used by visitors to Stumptown Park. The $968,100 renovation is expected to be completed this summer.
