Your library card is quite valuable

What has your library card done for you lately?

If homework has your kid frustrated, check out the York County Library website, www.yclibrary.org for a free private tutor. Elementary to high school students can prepare for tests or get a little extra help with math, reading comprehension, social studies and writing skills. Tutors are available 2-11 p.m., seven days a week online with your library card.

Before you pay for an SAT prep course, visit The Learning Express Library database that offers interactive practice exams and test preparation materials.

Older teens can take online practice PSAT, SAT, ACT and other college entrance tests. College students can take online practice graduate school entrance exams as well as courses on personal finance skills and public speaking. Technical and career college skills are also available. All are free and just a click away. Visit the library website, click on "Databases" under "Research Sources," click on "All Databases," then click on "Learning Express Library."

If your resume is not getting you where you want to be, consult the Job Search and Workplace Skills section for help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing and networking skills.

For those studying for licensing, certification and occupation aptitude tests, you will find instantly scored tests and online career preparation under the Jobs and Career section. Air traffic control, cosmetology, military and real estate are just a sampling of career tests offered.

If you have entered the digital age of reading books on a Kindle, Nook or other devices, remember to search the library's e-Book selections before reaching into your wallet to buy the same item. All you need is an Internet connection and your library card.

For those of you who enjoy getting off the computer and actually visiting the library in person, remember you can do more than check out books. Upcoming events include Vintage Game Day, American Girl Party, Friends of the Library Book Sale and Anime Club.

"Coupon Mama" Travise Smith will offer Money Saving Workshops at the Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie and York libraries over the next four Saturdays.

Smith will demonstrate how to save up to 50 percent or more on grocery and pharmacy products. Participants will receive the Coupon Mama workbook/manual and starter coupons. You must register for this event by calling any York County Library or visiting www.yclibrary.org.

It's time to dig out your library card and put it to use.
