The Charlotte Latin wrestling team has a proud tradition of winning, and this year the Hawks added a 15th state title to their trophy case after winning the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state wrestling championship - despite having only one senior, Luke Hedrick, on the roster.
And only one Latin wrestler won an individual state championship: freshman Billy McClelland took the 113-pound crown.
Providence Day, the NCISAA runner-up last year, finished fourth, led by 120-pound state champion Amit Naik and 170-pound state champ Ben Greenburg.
Charlotte Catholic won the ME-GA 7 conference title and finished fifth at the 3A West Regional meet before losing to Freedom in the first round of the 3A dual-team state playoffs.

Ardrey Kell had a historic year, winning its first Southwestern 4A tournament championship after Independence won the SW4A regular season crown.
Wrestler of the Year: Billy McClelland, Charlotte Latin. McClelland is just a freshman at Charlotte Latin, but the 15-year-old has been working on his craft with Hawks' coaches since the fourth grade and is already wrestling well beyond his years.
McClelland went 29-5 overall and won an individual state championship at 113 pounds, leading the Hawks to a state team title as well.
McClelland, who wrestles year round, also competed in the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University, where he finished 12th overall in his weight class, just missing All-American status.
Wrestling Coach of the Year: Richard Fletcher, Charlotte Latin. For the last 22 years, Fletcher has been re-writing the Latin wrestling record books on an annual basis.
This year, Fletcher guided his Hawks to the eighth state championship during his tenure, as Latin beat SouthLake Christian by only seven points.
