Grand Oak Elementary: The school has been designated a Personalized Learning School for CMS this year. A school team attended training this summer. The program is designed to develop the whole child and allow students to demonstrate mastery learning using multiple pathways to take ownership of their learning. http://pl.cmslearns.org.
• The school won five awards from the Mecklenburg PTA Council on Aug. 2.
They are: School Principal Award, Raymond Giovanelli; Outstanding Educator Award, Kelly Lippard; Membership Award, Communication Award and Parent Involvement Award.
Socrates Academy: The school will hold a Meet-and-Greet Aug. 25, 3-5 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal School: Back to School Nights will be held on the following dates: Lower School (K-5), Aug. 28; Middle School (Grades 6-8), Sept. 4.
Palisades Episcopal School: Back to School Nights will be held for parents only on the following dates: junior kindergarten-fourth parents, Sept. 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Grades fifth-eighth parents, Sept. 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Providence Day: Glyn Cowlishaw, Head of School, took the “ice bucket challenge” on the first day of school in support of the ALS Association. The faculty and staff raised over $200 during the day. Cowlishaw nominated colleagues Eric Hedinger, Sam Caudill, Kay Montross and Kenna Powell to follow suit.
Cannon School: Dom Pelucio has been selected as a member of the 2014 NAfME All-National Honor Symphony Orchestra.
Dom will perform at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Oct. 29 with over 600 U.S. high school students. The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles are organized by members of the National Association for Music Education. To be eligible for the national ensembles, participating students previously qualified at the state-level.
New leaders: Superintendent Barry Shepherd announced leadership changes on Aug. 5.
Drew Fitzgerald was promoted to principal of W.M. Irvin Elementary. Aimy Steele was promoted to principal of Concord Middle. Rosetta Le was promoted to assistant principal at Pitts School Road Elementary.
Lisa Hartman has joined Cabarrus County Schools as an assistant principal at W.R. Odell Elementary. Nicolle Sandor was promoted to AIG coordinator for the district. Christopher White will add fine arts coordinator to his responsibilities as Hickory Ridge High School band director.

Marvin Ridge High: The PTSO will hold an open house at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15.
Union Academy: The school will hold Senior Parent Night 5:45-6:45 p.m. Aug. 26 in the Gym.
Middle School Expo: Teachers participated in the district’s first Middle School Expo Aug. 6-7. The 40-session professional development event included courses on 3-D printing, creating digital textbooks and developing an academic vocabulary.
Metrolina Christian Academy: Lower school parent information night will be held 6-8 p.m. Aug. 28 in your child’s classroom.
First Assembly Christian School: Drop-in Open House will be held 2-4 p.m. Aug. 30.
India Hook Elementary: Kevin Hood has been approved by the school board as assistant principal at India Hook. Hood served as principal of Hunter Elementary in York from 2005-2014.
Northwestern High: Calvin Hudgins was selected as S.C. Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Hudgins is the boys and girls cross-country and track coach. His team won the S.C. Track and Field state championship this past spring.
• Mercedes Cain and Jonathan Fitzgerald recently represented Palmetto Girls State and Palmetto Boys State at Girls Nation and Boys Nation in Washington, D.C.
As part of the program, the seniors met with S.C. Sen. Lindsey Graham and other government representatives. The S.C. American Legion Auxiliary provides the all-expense-paid trip.

Westminster Catawba Christian School: Senior Parent Information Night will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Upper School (Catawba Campus) Open House will be held 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28.
