Charlotte Country Day field hockey, girls’ tennis win titles

The Charlotte Country Day field hockey and girls’ tennis teams won N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association titles during the fall season.

The Buccaneers’ tennis team (14-3) beat Cary Academy 5-4 in the NCISAA 3A final Oct. 25 at Wesleyan Christian Academy, the second straight title for Country Day tennis and 14th in school history.

Charlotte Country Day’s Avery Hunter was named all-state, as were Charlotte Latin’s Fleming Landau and Providence Day’s Caroline Kurani.

The Country Day field hockey team beat Durham Academy 1-0 in two overtimes Oct. 25 at Forsyth Country Day to win its second straight field hockey title. The Bucs finished the season 14-2.

The No. 3-seeded Bucs beat No. 2 Charlotte Latin 1-0 in the semifinals to face No. 1-seeded Durham Academy.

Country Day’s Shannon Baker, Anna Comer, Kathryn Holland and Megan Mahoney made the all-state team, as did Charlotte Latin’s Leila Evans, Camille Kane, Katherine Schell and Isabelle Sumichrast, and Providence Day’s Sarah Heacock and Leigh Premo.
