Union County area gymnasts land scholarships with colleges

As you head north on Providence Road, you might notice a new banner hanging on the side of the Weddington Activity Center announcing that Southeastern Gymnastics was named the National Club of the Year by USA Gymnastics.

As a testimony to that level of excellence, five of their gymnasts signed college letters of intent for scholarships with Division I gymnastic programs on Nov. 12 in a ceremony at the gym.

• Julianna Cannamela, Parkwood High School and daughter of John and Dawn Cannamela, signed with Louisiana State University.

• Claire Kern, Weddington High School and daughter of Matt and Jenny Kern, signed with University of Denver.

• Krista Collins, Weddington High School and daughter of Dave and Jane Collins, signed with the University of Pittsburgh.

• Nicole Wild, Cuthbertson High School and daughter of Steve and Mary Wild, signed with N.C. State.

• Megan McClelland, Charlotte Latin School and daughter of Craig and Penny McClelland, signed with the University of Maryland.

The gymnasts are coached by Ludmilla Shobe and Galina Meliakina, both of whom were once coaches of Russia’s national teams during the Soviet era.
