Charlotte churches set to celebrate with music

Churches in Charlotte are celebrating Christmas with music, ranging from full-scale Christmas musicals to traditional worship services.

Sharon Presbyterian church in SouthPark will hold its first-ever “Jazz Carol-In” at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.

“The idea is why go outside and carol when we can sing inside?” said David Tang, director of music for Sharon Presbyterian.

The music will be led by the Rick Bean Trio, and jazz vocalist Maddy Winer will perform. Bean was a student and friend of Loonis McGlohon, a Charlotte jazz pianist who was internationally known for his music and songwriting.

The musicians will perform Christmas songs, and the during hour-long concert the audience will be asked to sing along occasionally, Tang said. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.

The Jazz Carol-In will be held in the church’s chapel, which Tang describes as one of the “greatest acoustic spaces in Charlotte.”

Hot cider and desserts will be served, creating a café-like atmosphere.

Tang said the church has received a great response to the jazz show, and it likely will become an annual event.

The Jazz Carol-In is open to the public, and childcare will be provided. Reservations are strongly encouraged because of the chapel’s seating capacity of about 160 people.
