After 30 years in Matthews, Linda’s Childrens Shoppe is closed, almost.
Owner Jill Cannon said she has opened a small booth in HomeStyles Gallery and Specialty Shops in Mint Hill, at the corner of Lawyers and Matthews Mint Hill roads, where customers can still find a small selection of traditional children’s clothing and other items.
“We have moms who shopped with us to outfit their daughters, and are now shopping with us to outfit their grandchildren,” Cannon said.
She’s been with the store since her friend, Linda Troutman, opened it in Matthews Depot 30 years ago. A few years later, the store moved to the South Trade Street location.

Cannon bought the store from Troutman 20 years ago but kept the name because, by that time, the store had become a fixture in the town.
“There were actually businesses in this same building that included our name on their business cards so their customers could find them,” Cannon said.
She said the downsizing is necessary because she is caring for her parents and also wants more time to play with her grandchildren. She has five, and another on the way.
“It is sad to think about leaving Matthews after all these years,” said Cannon, who’s last day on South Trade Street was Dec. 31.
“It’s truly been a great experience and I just want my customers to know how much I appreciate all the business they have given us for the past three decades.”
