Newell

Shop locally: The Newell Farmers Market will open Saturday at 1704 Rocky River Road. The selection opening day is expected to include squash, sweet potatoes, snow peas, snap peas, cucumbers and fresh strawberries. Northeast Mecklenburg

Racing brings delays: Expect heavy traffic on Interstate 85 May 20-29 due to racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The N.C. Department of Transportation says to expect delays elsewhere in northeast Mecklenburg, as well as southwest Cabarrus counties. Expect delays also on U.S. 29, N.C. 49 and Bruton Smith Boulevard. N.C. DOT will use overhead and portable message signs to alert motorists and suggest alternate routes. Check for updates by calling 511 or using N.C. DOT Mobile, a phone-friendly version of the N.C. DOT website: m.ncdot.gov.

Trustees: Dhiaa Jamil has been elected to a four-year term on UNC Charlotte's board of trustees. Jamil is group executive, chief generation officer and chief nuclear officer for Duke Energy. He also serves as chairman of the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center at UNC Charlotte and is a board member of the UNC Charlotte Foundation. The UNC Board of Governors also re-elected Robert Hull, Joe Price and Laura Schulte to four-year terms: They will be sworn in Sept. 22. Student body President Dave Craven was sworn in as an ex-officio member April 28, replacing Megan Smith.
