Have a taste: Live music, food from The Shoppes at University Place restaurants, free beverages, paddle boats and more are planned for the first University City Taste. The Charlotte Chamber event celebrating University City restaurants and businesses will be 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday at The Shoppes at University Place, 8929 J.M. Keynes Drive.

Tickets are $7 in advance at the University City YMCA, $8 at www.ez-tixx.com and $10 at the event.

Afterschool care: Children in kindergarten through eighth grade can be enrolled in an afterschool program at the University City YMCA, 8100 Old Mallard Creek Road.

Basketball skills: Registration is open for a basketball skills clinic for ages 9-13. It will be 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 8, 15 and 29 at Vance High School gym, 7600 IBM Drive. It's presented by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Athletic League and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce.
