Celebrate Teen Reed Week: It's a book cover contest for ages 12-18. Create a work of art as a book cover, representing your favorite book. Draw your ideas, make a collage or use computer-generated images. Pick up an entry sheet starting Oct. 17 at University City Regional Library. Entries are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 22. Party at new clinic: A new urgent care clinic will open Oct. 8 at 2720 W. Mallard Creek Road with a free neighborhood event. The clinic will serve free pizza, ice cream and refreshments. Children can have their faces painted, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and Fire departments will be there for photos. T-shirts, first-aid kits and hand sanitizers will be given away.
Clinic hours are 8 a.m.-7:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-5:45 p.m. Sundays.
Poetry reading: Poet Elizabeth Alexander will conduct a reading and book signing at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the UNC Charlotte Center City Auditorium. Alexander is the author of five volumes of poetry. For President Obama's inauguration in 2009, she read the original work "Praise Song for the Day."
