Band/choir fundraiser: The Mallard Creek High School PTSA invites everyone to a "Flapjack Fundraiser" breakfast Oct. 15 to support the school's marching band and choir.

Free jazz workshop: International music educator Jamey Aebersold will lead a free Jazz Workshop 10:15 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 29, jointly sponsored by Charlotte's Jazz Arts Initiative and the UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture.

The program, part of the Wells Fargo Community Celebration, will be at the UNCC Center City Campus, 320 E. Ninth St., Charlotte.

Musicians of all ages are invited to bring their instruments to the intensive, three-hour, hands-on workshop to improve their jazz playing skills. Space is limited; advance registration is required. Register at www.theJazzArts.org. Details: 704-336-9350.

Code Talkers: "Native Words, Native Warriors," a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, will be at the Charlotte Museum of History Oct. 22-Jan. 1.

The exhibition tells of soldiers and Marines from more than a dozen tribes who used their Native languages for vital communications - fast and undecipherable by the enemy - while serving in the U.S. military during the two World Wars.
