Thanksgiving Dinner: The University City YMCA will host a free Thanksgiving dinner 6-8 p.m. Thursday, 8100 Old Mallard Creek Road. The event will provide fellowship and entertainment for the 500 people expected.

This year's invitations went to individuals and families at local homeless shelters, women's shelters, churches and economically fragile neighborhoods.

More than 200 volunteers are expected to help serve the meal, transport guests and help with setup and cleanup.

Child-care center sold: Michigan-based Rainbow Child Care Center is expanding into Charlotte, buying a building at 3500 Prosperity Church Road.

The 10,700-square-foot building sold while in foreclosure. It has a capacity of 150 children.

Barbecue benefit: Countryside Montessori School will sell beef brisket and Boston butts Friday to benefit Huntersville's Angels & Sparrow Soup Kitchen.
