Holiday giving: Our Foundation for Children, a local nonprofit, is taking donations for its annual Spirit of Giving Project, which will provide toys, meals and other assistance to families in need.

The foundation is accepting food, money, unwrapped toys and other items through Dec. 12. Sponsorships and partnerships also are needed.

The items will be distributed during the Spirit of Giving event noon-3 p.m. Dec. 17 at 5630 Phillips St. For information, call Vianne Howitt, 704-547-4513, or Clair Lane, 704-236-8945.

Youth achievement: Mallard Creek High School senior Ben Cournoyer recently was among six Mecklenburg County teens named winners of the 2011 GoodWorks Youth Awards.

Cournoyer started the Derita Athletic-Troop 13 Peer Tutoring Program four years ago after two teammates were unable to return to the Derita Redskins football team because of academics.

Rocky River

State to meet with public: The N.C. Department of Transportation will host an open house 6-8 p.m. Dec. 13 to discuss proposed improvements to track and rail crossings between northeast Charlotte and Concord.

The meeting will take place at the Charlotte Friends Meetinghouse, 570 W. Rocky River Road. No formal presentation is planned.

The proposed project would add another track beside the existing railroad track, from south of N.C. 49 near Concord to Orr Road in northeast Charlotte. New bridges also are proposed to separate automobile and train traffic.
